
In the industrial market, silicon nitride balls are mainly divided into hot pressed silicon nitride balls and gas pressure sintered silicon nitride balls. These two production processes lead to obvious differences in density, toughness, production cost and application scenarios. Purchasers need to distinguish material types to select suitable silicon nitride balls.
Hot pressing molding adopts uniaxial high temperature and high pressure processing. Under the combined action of mechanical pressure and high temperature, silicon nitride powder is densely sintered. The finished product has extremely high density, almost no internal pores, and uniform crystal structure. The hardness and fracture toughness of hot pressed balls are the highest among all silicon nitride products.
Gas pressure sintering uses nitrogen protective atmosphere for high-temperature sintering without external mechanical pressure. The production cost is low and the output is large, which is suitable for mass industrial production. The interior of sintered balls has a small amount of tiny pores, and the physical properties are slightly lower than hot pressed products, but it can meet the working needs of most conventional industrial equipment.
In terms of mechanical performance difference, hot pressed silicon nitride balls have stronger impact resistance and high-load bearing capacity. They are suitable for aerospace bearings, precision medical implants and ultra-high-speed machine tool spindles. Sintered silicon nitride balls are more suitable for general industrial bearings, hydraulic valves and conventional transmission equipment with medium load.
In terms of surface finish, hot pressed blanks have compact texture, which is easier to polish into ultra-smooth mirror surface. The roughness can reach below 0.005μm, meeting G5 ultra-precision grade standard. Sintered balls have slight surface pores, and the highest precision is generally limited to G10 grade.
From the perspective of cost and delivery cycle, sintered silicon nitride balls have obvious cost advantages and can be produced in batches. Hot pressed balls require expensive molds and long processing time, so the unit price is higher. Enterprises can select processing technology according to load demand, precision standard and budget.
