Corrosion failure is one of the most common damage forms of metal rolling balls in industrial production. Silicon nitride balls have outstanding chemical inertness and corrosion resistance, which enables them to work stably in acid, alkali, saltwater and chemical vapor environments. Exploring its corrosion resistance mechanism helps enterprises reasonably arrange material selection for harsh working conditions.
Silicon nitride ceramic belongs to covalent bond compound with stable molecular structure. The internal atomic arrangement is compact, and the chemical bond energy is high, so it is difficult to react with common corrosive substances at room temperature and medium temperature. Unlike steel balls that easily produce oxidation reaction and rust, silicon nitride will not undergo electrochemical corrosion in humid electrolyte environment.
In acidic environments such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid solution, silicon nitride balls maintain stable physical properties. Strong acid cannot erode its internal structure, and there will be no surface peeling, pitting or weight loss. This is completely different from carbon steel and stainless steel, which are severely corroded after long-term immersion in strong acid liquid.
Alkaline resistance is another core advantage of silicon nitride balls. In high-concentration alkaline solution, most metal materials will suffer from alkali brittleness and stress corrosion. Silicon nitride ceramic does not react with alkaline substances, and its surface smoothness and mechanical hardness remain unchanged after long-term immersion. It is widely used in chemical reaction kettles and alkaline fluid conveying valves.
Saltwater and marine atmospheric corrosion is also effectively resisted by silicon nitride balls. Chloride ions in seawater can easily destroy the passivation film of stainless steel and cause pitting corrosion. Silicon nitride has no conductive ions inside, so chloride ions cannot penetrate the surface to cause structural damage. It is the preferred rolling component for offshore marine equipment.
Benefiting from the stable covalent bond structure, silicon nitride balls avoid various electrochemical and chemical corrosion problems. For chemical industry, marine engineering and wet processing industry, silicon nitride balls are reliable anti-corrosion solutions to reduce equipment failure rate.
